In Tamil Nadu state Schools can select to affiliate themselves to the Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education / CBSE / ICSE board. This are three board who had authority to conduct secondary (class 10) and higher secondary (class 12) final examinations and award certificates to successful students.

The Secondary School Leaving Certificate is also commonly referred to as SSLC. This is a certification obtained by a student on successful completion of an examination at the end of study at the secondary schooling level in India.
